Everything You Need To Know About The Homes For Heroes Program

Real Estate Blog

Buying a home can be tough. It may take years for hard-working families to save up a down payment. Sometimes getting a little help can make all the difference in a new home purchase. There are many programs out there that can help with everything from the down payment to discounted brokerage fees. Homes for Heroes is one such program.

What is the Homes for Heroes Program?

The Homes for Heroes program is designed to help those who help America. The program, established shortly after 9/11, pulls together local Realtors, mortgage lenders, title examiners, and home inspectors in order to offer discounts and rebates to those people that serve as heroes in the community.

Who Qualifies for the Homes for Heroes Program?

Initially, the goal was to help police officers and fire fighters. The reach of the Homes for Heroes program has expanded, however, to include teachers, spiritual leaders, current military and veterans, and health care workers, all of whom are heroes. They give so much of themselves to serve their community and this program is a way to give back to them and a way to say thanks.

How Much Can a Hero Typically Save?

The average hero saves $2,400. The program helps heroes save money on a variety of fees and services required during the home-buying process, including lender points, real estate fees, title paperwork, and the home inspection. While this can be in the form of discounts, heroes can also receive a rebate check.

The actual amount of the rebate depends on the value of the home. The Homes for Heroes program gifts back money to their heroes valued at 0.7% of the purchase price of their new home. A home valued at $200,000 would net a hero $1,400. It is sent in the form of a check after closing and can be used for anything the hero needs to help make their new house a home.

What's the Catch?

There is no catch. Homes for Heroes is a program designed to help the often under-appreciated heroes in our local communities who risk their lives and go above and beyond every day for everyone else.

Does The Program Only Work When I Buy a Home?

No -- Homes for Heroes works whether you are buying, selling, or just refinancing. You can use the program to save on the services you use when you are ready to sell or refinance your existing home, not just when you are buying a new one.

Homes for Heroes is a way for housing professionals in your community to say thank you. For more information, contact companies like RE/MAX Alliance.
